The full benefits of a brisk walk

Writer's picture: THE DVNTHE DVN

According to studies we do little or no exercise. By just walking briskly for half an hour each day we can go a long way in improving our health and fitness levels.

Todays walk explored a park in Ealing, West London. Northala Field opened in 2008 and consists of four artificial hills, as well as a few fishing lakes, a large field area perfect for dog owners and a children's play area and a café.

Fun Fact!

The site was originally used as playing fields by the London Borough of Kensington and Chelsea, but was purchased by Ealing Council in 1997 for development into a new park. It is part of the larger Northolt Greenford Countryside Park, which makes up over 100 hectares of green space in the northwest of the borough of Ealing.

Other than regular walking there are always other ways throughout the day to walk more. For example, getting off the bus a few stops early means you are walking more.

Taking the stairs instead of jumping in the lift or taking the escalators is another way of working towards achieving the recommended 10,000 steps per day

Here are a few tips we suggest to make your walks are more enjoyable and comfortable:

  • Have a healthy breakfast before setting out so you have plenty of energy.

  • Before walking do a few minutes of gentle stretching to help avoid body stiffness, tone your muscles and lose body fat.

  • Wear comfortable shoes that allow your feet to breath.
