The Fabulous World of Dior

Writer's picture: THE DVNTHE DVN

We made sure to see the Dior exhibition in Harrods before it ended. We entered the magical world of Dior and saw the amazing creations which showcased Dior's iconic beauty, fashion and homewares in a gingerbread house themed displays.

Facts about Christian Dior:

  • Dior took over a small art gallery which his father bought for him, where he and a friend sold work by artists including Pablo Picasso.

  • The company was founded in 1946 by French fashion designer Christian Dior, who was originally from Normandy.

  • Following the Great Depression in 1929, the death of both his parents and the collapse of his father's business, Dior was forced to close his art gallery. He then went to work with fashion designer Robert Piguet until he was called up for military service in 1940.

  • At the end of his service in 1942, he began working for couturier Lucien Long, where he and Pierre Balmain were the primary designers.

  • On December 16, 1946 he founded the house of Christian Dior at 30 Avenue Montaigne Paris, backed by Marcel Boussac, a cotton-fabric magnate.

The exhibition was filled with decor inspired by Christmas fairytales and stories.

It was a wonderful creation, perfect for the whole family.

The store’s exterior alone features more than 44 window displays, and a light installation with stars, roses and other references to Dior.
